Why ignore the sailors after all?

My father and brother have both served in the Navy. My brother still does, so when I heard about a woman named Shanti, her blog is called Adventures in Paradise, who was deploying to command a ship of sailors and wanted to provide a hand knit hat to every sailor serving on that ship, I was charmed. After all, my bro likes the hats I knit, so why not help?

Hand knit Hats for the U.S. Sailors

Her mother, Lynne, decided to make that idea a reality by contacting knitters all over the country and soon the hats started rolling in. I sent a lovely dark green one that I hope will be comfy to some cold sailor.

A note from Lynne asked us all to let everyone know that a new Ravelry group, Hats for Sailors, was just started to continue the effort. It’s important to understand that there are many groups that take care of soldiers, but few for the U.S. Navy. It’s also important – very important – to pay close attention to the 100% Washable Wool requirement as it is a safety measure to protect the sailors.

Other than that, if you’re looking for a little extra something to contribute during this holiday season – or if you are looking to bust your stash a little in preparation for all those gift certificates you’ll get from Santa – consider knitting up a hat for a sailor.

And Thanks!
