Hiking the Makapu’u Trail in Oahu

You knew there’d be hiking, right? Steve wanted to do this long ugly slog that was supposed to have views at the top, but it didn’t look like fun to me, so I found this one. The Makapu’u Trail starts out with views and has views nearly all the way to the top (about 2.5 miles round trip).

Several locals were exclaiming over this succulent blooming. It grew all over one giant section of the trail and it apparently ‘almost never’ blooms. None of the locals had ever seen it bloom before. How lucky are we?

These are some of the pillboxes – they dot the mountains and were built as basic housing for lookouts during war-time.
